Standard Winter Cover
STANDARD WINTER COVER CROP MIX
Standard Winter Cover Mix is a five species mix consisting of Oats, Triticale, Vetch, Peas and Canola. Some of the benefits of the Standard Winter Cover Mix are that it improves soil quality by increasing soil organic matter, increases soil fertility, suppresses weeds and nematodes, reduces soil erosion, improves water infiltration and retention, creates a better seedbed for spring planting, and increases organic carbon content.
Oats
Oats is an annual forage cereal. It can be used for grazing, hay-making, silage and as a companion crop. It is an excellent pre-summer weed suppressor. It protects the soil and prevents soil erosion.
Triticale
Triticale is an annual forage crop. It can be used for grazing, hay-making, silage and as a cover crop. It is very drought tolerant. It has an extensive root system that traps nutrients, prevents soil erosion and suppresses weeds.
Vetch
Vetch is an annual forage legume that increases soil fertility and organic matter in the soil. It has nitrogen fixation capabilities. It is extremely palatable and is used for forage and silage.
Peas
Peas are a winter annual legume. It has nitrogen fixation capabilities. It prevents soil erosion and aids in suppressing weeds. It has a good tolerance to cold conditions. Suitable for forage.
Canola
Canola is a winter crop that is fairly cold resistant. It can be cultivated in a wide variety of soils. It is effective in suppressing soil pests such as root pathogens and plant-parasitic nematodes.
