Planting and Sowing
PLANTING AND SOWING PROCEDURES
Planting and Sowing Procedures
- Sowing should take place after consistent rainfall.
- Double-check machines to ensure that they drop the correct amount of seeds per line.
- Fertilization must be done based on the results of the soil analysis.
- Be careful not to mix the seeds with the nitrogen/potassium dressing as the seeds might burn.
- Phosphate dressing may be mixed with the seeds on the day of sowing.
- Planting in dry conditions is only recommended if rainfall is predicted shortly after planting.
- Seeds can be sowed widely (broadcast) or in rows:
- by hand;
- with a fertilizer spreader;
- with a fine seed planter (35-45 cm rows);
- with a wheat planter with blades/teeth removed;
- The correct planting depth is an important factor. Optimal planting depth is usually between 10mm and 25mm. Planting too deep may hinder the germination.
- Plant with 150 – 200 kg/ha Supper phosphate.
- The use of a roller is recommended after sowing to compact the seeds into the soil.
